Popcorn!!!!!! |
We kids would call to each other from our beds, "Is Dad making popcorn?"
{making popcorn was Dad's domain}
Shortly, the savory aroma would waft its way up the stairs, dividing itself into three paths heading straight to our individual sets of nostrils. We would breathe in the perfume and.....
In unison, "MMMMMOOOOOMMMMMMM," we would loudly call, "Can we have some popcorrrrrrrn?"
Within a few minutes, the sound of footsteps on creaking stairs was as welcome as rain on a parched desert. Mom would present our bedtime feast, 3 little bowls of popcorn and 3 half-full bathroom Dixie cups of Coke. Ahhhhh....delight!! (Bathroom Dixie cups....like the size of a shot glass! Not that I'd know)
Since then, popcorn has been a happy treat for me lo these many years. I don't make it on the stove top like Dad did. I buy the microwave kind.....I've tried all the brands; and I like!!
Because of my .... let's call it "freaky-ness" I wanted to try to make my own microwave popcorn without having to wait till Orville or Cousin Willie go on sale. Soooo....after a little research and experimentation......
TA DA..... Farm Girl's Microwave Popcorn
Great Value......Wal-mart...yes, I shop there, too. |
1 tsp. canola oil
1/2 tsp. salt (popcorn salt would be best...I don't have any sooo kosher must suffice)
- In a small bowl, combine popping corn and oil, mixing very well.
- Pour these coated kernels into an ordinary plain brown paper lunch bag.
- Sprinkle in the salt.
- Fold the top of the bag down 2 times and give the contents a little shake.
Put the bag in the microwave (the one I use is 1250 watts) for 2 minutes. Take it out PROMPTLY and pour it into a bowl. Not all the kernels will pop (I don't know!..what am I? a scientist?) so don't try to cook it longer...it's just gonna burn and stink up the house.
Today I tried my own version of kettle corn....I added 1 Tablespoon of sugar with the salt. I noticed a greater tendency to burn...so I had to be pretty quick. I still had to sort out about 8 or so overly browned guys but.....no matter, lunch was served and it was deeeelicious (Cowboy is away today helping teach kids how to ride a horse....popcorn would NOT have been allowed to be on his plate....but while Cowboy's away, Farm Girl eats popcorn for lunch!!)
